Most car manufacturers recommend changing the entire timing system – belt, belt tensioner units, and idler pulleys – at the same time as this is the only way to ensure optimum belt tension which is critical for maintaining optimum engine performance.
SKF makes it easy to do a complete timing system job, offering more than 500 timing belt kits with 97 per cent coverage of the car parc in Europe. SKF timing belt and water pump kits make doing a complete repair easy. The kits contain the belt, tensioners, and water pump — all the right parts, all in one box, all of them meeting or exceeding original OE specifications.
In cases where the water pump is driven by the timing belt, it’s considered good practice to replace the pump when replacing the belt, mainly due to the fact that if the pump fails a few kilometres down the road, most of the labour costs will be incurred by the customer again. When they know the facts, most customers would rather do the complete repair now, rather than risk more costs and a potential breakdown.
